U(DYS)TOPIA – A German-Indonesian Arts Project

2010 May-Juni “U(DYS)TOPIA – the emergence of myths, fairy tales and legends in contemporary Indonesia and Germany“ is the programmatic title of this joint arts project featuring both Indonesian and German artists. In May and June 2010 the German audience will have the chance to witness the presentation of the work of seven young Indonesian and seven upcoming German artists. In a direct artistic dialogue they will be collaborating on art works, performances and exhibitions – and the results of this dialogue will then be presented to the art audiences of Dresden and Berlin.
U(DYS)TOPIA brings together a young generation of artists from two different cultures and has them explore one and the same theme: the impact of myths on contemporary arts. The Indonesian curator and art lecturer Sujud Dartanto (Indonesian Art Institute Yogyakarta, Central Java) has, together with the artists Franziska Fennert (Dresden) and Lenny Ratnasari (Yogyakarta) and the curator and author Martin Jankowski (Berlin), created a ground-breaking project. At the beginning of May 2010, all participants will come together for the project kick-off at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (Hochschule für Bildende Künste). The following artists will be teaming up and working together:

German                                          Indonesian

2. Ulrike Stolte                           2. Rifqi Sukma

On May 27, the first U(DYS)TOPIA exhibition opening will take place at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden (Brühlsche Terrasse 1). The following performances, concerts, readings, dance or film events and public discussions will keep the artistic process running. At the end of May, the artists will move to Berlin and pick up work at the Freies Museum (Potsdamer Straße 91) where the next exhibition opening will be celebrated on June 12. On June 18, a contemporary Wayang puppets performance (shadow play) will be presented in Dresden. The Berlin exhibition will then come to a close on June 22.
